Balance Problems Due to Oversized Handle * Other Quality Issues
After purchasing the 16" version of this Wok from the Wok Shop and being very pleased with it and the shop's customer service, we decided to buy this 12" version for cooking small meals or certain ingredients to be combined into a larger Wok at the end of the cooking process.
Unfortunately, the handle on this 12" model is the exact same size, length and weight as the handle on the much larger model. This large wooden handle works great on our 16" Wok, but when attached to a 12" pan, the Wok is badly off balance and refuses to sit level on a Wok Ring or when placed directly on our stove's cast iron burner grates. You basically have to hold onto the Wok with one hand at all times, otherwise the Wok will tip over in the direction the handle is pointing.
In addition to the proportion issue with the handle, the Wok we received came out of the packing box with a loose and wobbly wooden handle and a few days after seasoning it as the Wok Shop suggests, the handle...
Still looking for a decent Wok. Updated 02/21/2012!
A hand hammered wok should be thick skinned, and tough... this thing bends if you look at it funny... It's too thin-skinned for anything other than a quick stir-fry.
I recently got a high-BTU (90k) stove, and found out a thin-skinned wok such as this works slightly better than my nice thick-skinned wok (which I got overseas during a vacation). I also brought this camping with me (b/c I didn't care if I lost it), and found out that it worked quite well.
So this would be the original 3 stars on a standard 9k btu (standard US) stove, but a 5 star on high BTU stoves & (unknown BTU) campfires.
Total waste of money ...
Buyers beware that this wok has a round bottom. Round bottom wok does NOT work for all stove tops. This one does NOT work for my gas stove top. And, this particular pow wok has a very Pointed round bottom. It did not work even with the FREE rings sent from the seller. Wood handle wobbles too. It is a total waste of my money. I wished that the seller had spelled out that the round bottom wok only work for certain stove tops. Due to the weight and size of the wok, return shipping will be the same as the wok. That is to say, I am stuck with this wok. It is totally useless. Total waste of money! I was very eager to try the "carbon steel" type wok. Now, I am Very disappointed.
